Creative Update 52 – Garland Kirkpatrick

Hello everyone. This is Donnell and I am the Senior Manager of Digital Operations in Anaheim.

Early in my graphic design education I had the opportunity to be mentored by a few excellent Graphic Design and Illustration professors at CSU Fullerton.

From my perspective, Garland Kirkpatrick was always on the cutting edge of exceptional graphic design with the rare and unique ability to blur the lines between conventional graphic design for “profit’s sake” and graphic design as “fine art.” As a young, aspiring designer in the 1990s (yes, I just dated myself!) he helped me to broaden my horizons and not to look at graphic design simply as a means of income but also as a way to creatively express yourself.

Here are some of my favorite pieces from Garland.

Here is a link for more information on Garland’s history and work in the industry. He is now a professor at Loyola Marymount University. Enjoy!
